The word “letter” in Hebrew is ot (אוֹת), which also means “sign” or “wonder”. Each letter of Hebrew Alphabet, thus contains signs and wonders that points to truth in life. The English Alphabet is thus believed to come from the Hebrew lettering, in fact, the word Alphabet is actually from the first two letters of the Hebrew lettering – Aleph and Bet.
According to midrash (genre of rabbinic literature which contains early interpretations and commentaries on the Written Torah), the Lord God Himself taught the alphabet (along with the numerical values, mathematical relationships, signs, symbols, pictograph etc for each letters) to Adam.
